If you’ve clicked around the site already, welcome — this is the first real post from the new blog, and it feels right to spend it on the thing you’re currently looking at.

The short version: the old site had run its course, so we rebuilt the whole thing from the ground up instead of patching around it. Here’s what changed.

Our stories, actually hosted here

Our short fiction used to live scattered across other platforms, behind other platforms’ accounts and quirks. Not anymore — seven stories are now hosted natively, in full, right on this site. No signups, no paywalls, no leaving to go read something we wrote. Head over to Writing and pick your poison.

A real blog (hi)

This post is proof of concept — the blog you’re reading right now is native to the site instead of an embedded feed from somewhere else. Studio updates, dev notes, and community shoutouts will land here going forward, filterable by topic once there’s enough of a backlog to filter.

YouTube and Podcasts, actually current

The YouTube and Podcasts pages got pulled in line with what’s actually live today — every playlist card points at a real, currently-active playlist instead of a generic “go check the channel” link. There’s also a dedicated section for watching Shadows RPG actually played at the table, across all four campaigns currently running, if you want to see the game in action before picking up the book.

Somewhere to actually say hi

The Contact page got a refresh too — it’s not just a Discord link anymore, it’s got a proper front door, plus quick links to everywhere else we hang out. Discord’s still the fastest way to reach us, but now you’ve got options.

One studio, one look

We also went back through the whole site and made sure every page actually feels like it belongs to the same brand — consistent colors, consistent voice, real brand art instead of leftover stock images. Small thing, but it matters.

That’s the site. Now for the part we’re actually most excited about:

We’re back in the trenches on the Shadows RPG Core Rulebook. It’s been heads-down work for a while, but it’s moving again, and we’ll be sharing more here as there’s more to show — dev notes, playtest findings, and a real look at what’s coming next for NYTE City.

Stick around. Join the Discord if you haven’t — that’s still the fastest way to hear things first. More soon.

We rebuilt Get Dangerous Games from scratch: hosted fiction, a native blog, refreshed YouTube and Podcasts pages, and more. We’ve got some exciting news to share with you. We recently had a blast hanging out with Nick from 20MinuteGamer. It was like a virtual gaming session with an old friend — talking about games, movies, TV, our roots, and all things fun. Seriously, we recorded for an hour and then kept talking long into the night after the recording was done.

So grab your favorite snack, kick back, and let’s Get Dangerous!

Kicking It With 20MinuteGamer

First things first — if you haven’t checked out Nick’s channel yet, you’re seriously missing out. Head over to 20MinuteGamer right now. He’s got epic gameplay videos on games like Phantom Brigade, Aliens: Dark Descent, and a bunch more. His approach to the channel is unique, and he’s focused on getting the best gaming experience for your time.

Nostalgia Trip Down Gaming Lane

Our chat with Nick took us on a nostalgic trip, and we found we had a mutual love for RTS and squad-based games. It’s awesome how these genres bring out the strategist and commander in all of us — you can still see it in the games we gravitate toward today. We reminisced about the gaming histories that got us hooked as kids, like one of us (that’s me!) who had a Commodore 64 and an Amiga as gaming companions while everyone else was booting up DOS and Windows 3.1.

Our Gaming Faves

In addition to talking about our roots, we discussed what’s got our interest in the present, both games and publishers. We talked about the ever-changing landscape of games, the value of high-quality smaller publishers, and some AAA gems we’ve found along the way. There was even some nerding out over Destiny 2 and Darktide, so if you like those titles, you’re in for a treat.

Our Approach to Gaming and Content Creation

When it comes to making content, we keep it real. Our passion for gaming is what drives us, and we want to share that with you. Our true passion project is Shadows, our original TTRPG (catch us every Thursday at 8pm on Twitch). Alongside that, we’re always livestreaming games — mixing newer content like Baldur’s Gate 3 with older stuff like Civilization 6, some really old stuff (Shadow Warrior, anyone?), and our latest love, Elden Ring (shoutout to Nick for the gift!).

The goal of our channel is to engage the Get Dangerous community and give you something entertaining to sink into at the end of the day. We want you to feel safe taking a risk and trying something new, and we’ll keep checking out new titles and publishers to let you know when it’s time to really Get Dangerous.

In Conclusion

For us, gaming is all about community and connecting with fellow gamers. Our chat with 20MinuteGamer was a blast, and we want you to be part of the fun too.

Check out our channel, Get Dangerous, and let’s geek out together over the world of gaming. And of course, don’t forget to swing by 20MinuteGamer’s channel for more epic gaming adventures. Nick, thanks a bunch for the awesome chat and for being part of our gaming journey. We’re stoked to keep exploring the gaming universe with gamers like you. Stay tuned for more writing, gaming, and badassery from Get Dangerous!

It has been a while since we posted.

There’s a reason for that — namely, it wasn’t working for us. We tried posting once a day, but it just became an advertising space for our daily video uploads to the YouTube channel.

I think these posts should start up again, but they’ll only go out when something of note happens in the Get Dangerous community. That’s why we’re here today!

We’ve been experimenting with upgrading our YouTube content to be more than just clips of a VOD. As of the last week, we’ve started adding not just a title card to our videos, but a custom introduction for each one. I expect that once we get to the point of editing the videos down a bit more, the daily cadence will slow dramatically.

Speaking of daily uploads — that’ll continue until at least the end of November. I had a personal goal of doing a daily upload for an entire year, and I’m already too far in to stop now! Thinking on it, we’ll likely do a retrospective once that date hits and talk about what we’re doing next and how. It’s been fun learning some tricks to get these videos out quickly and always on time.

Hope you lovely people out there are doing well. We’ll keep trying to make something of Get Dangerous and bring you updates when we feel like they’ll matter!

Hey everyone, Melf here!

If you’ve been following along with our podcast Fiction Factory, you’ll note that the last few episodes have been a little different. Rather than sticking to the world-building side of things, I recently started a deep dive into our different character archetypes and how they fit into the world of Shadows and NYTE City.

In this mini-series, we’ll be delving deep into the gritty world of NYTE City and learning more about the people within. Each episode will focus on a different character archetype, exploring their skills, powers, and traits, as well as how they’ve managed to survive in the back alleys and boardrooms of NYTE City.

With each episode, I’ll provide insight into how these archetypes are the backbone of a character’s concept, and how they can be adapted to fit different storylines and campaigns.

We’ll also be discussing the importance of working with your Game Master (GM) to make sure your character’s archetype fits within the Power Level of the campaign, and the different ways you can use Skills, Advantages, and Freebie Points to enhance your character’s capabilities.

In addition to providing valuable information for players of Shadows, the mini-series will also be a great resource for anyone interested in exploring the cyberpunk genre. And with each episode only 20 minutes long, it’s the perfect way to get your feet wet without committing to a full-length podcast.

So whether you’ve been a longtime follower of Shadows or you’re just starting out, join us for the character archetype mini-series! The first two episodes, focusing on the versatile Human and the mystical Arcanist archetypes, are available now!

Fiction Factory dives into Shadows' character archetypes one episode at a time — the Human and the Arcanist are up first.

NYTELights Progress Report #5

OK, got more good stuff coming in! I was recently on vacation and able to beta test the system a little with experienced gamers who were able to offer some good feedback. There’s some good news with the Quick Start Guide and more. Let’s get into it.

Synergy System Progress

The very first section is still on the edge of completion. There were some discussions based on beta testing revolving around the armor and how it works in the system. Thus, there’s a bit of rehashing on that topic so we can get it just right. Mainly, we don’t want the armor to feel like its own mini-game, so it’s getting the tweak treatment (or “tweakment,” if you will) to resolve this.

Let’s discuss the beta test a little. I was able to successfully run a game for approximately 32 hours. The main issue that appeared during gameplay was a sense of clarity (which was my fault, since I usually don’t give away the goat when running the game). After letting my testers know what each check was pitted against and how it worked, things changed dramatically. What we learned about how the game works is this:

Damage & Armor

Seems really tanky at Heroic Level, which can translate to lower levels of play.

Nerf Resilience by 1-3 points, nerf Integrity by 15-30%, nerf overall protection by 1-5 points.

Damage from firearms is lacking as well and needs a buff.

Boost damage of firearms by 1-3 points overall.

Note: all of the above for armor is being hammered out as we speak and the actual mechanics will fluctuate a little.

Game Mastering

There’s a lot to consider with the way abilities, stats, ADV/DIS, powers, skills, etc. all work.

Simplified stat blocks are going to be essential for streamlining the experience.

Magic and Difficulties

Power scaling needs to be boosted.

Teleportation and other abilities that let you break the game are too easy to accomplish. (i.e. Teleport as a spell bypassed all defenses in a technological sense, and TN 8 with TH 5 wasn’t high enough for Dark Sorcery.)

TN for world-breaking magic should be a flat 10, period.

TH should have a standard metric of increase for magical effects that would cause balancing issues in-game (+1 for something challenging, +2 for something really complex or over the top, +3 for anything extremely balance-shifting).

Checks

Power scales need to be made for all checks, so it’s clear just how hard or easy a check is, regardless of its type. This was added to our team OneNote for review.

Basically, all the tweaks suggested here are great. This is proof that the system is solid as it is and merely needs refinement — that’s the best part of the baseline mechanics, they’re good and sturdy. That said, the next two sections will get their tender loving care while the next phases of testing take off.

Unofficially, we’re in a mixed bag of possible testing. In the near future, Scott is going to run the game to test the GM experience as a new GM for Shadows — critical work for the GM section of the Core Rulebook. While we get that organized, we’ll be running with some new players as a closed beta test to add to our knowledge of the system.

This is just a prediction, but I feel there’s a good chance we’ll have an open beta test available in the next few months. It will need a way of taking surveys and getting that feedback back to us. The Quick Start Guide will be the control point for this test as well.

Into the Future!

For this month and next, I’m going to be putting some serious effort into the lore and world building of Shadows. This is going to be a heavy section, but that’s a good thing — lots to throw in. Most of it will cover the major players in NYTE City: kingpins, emperors, corporate CEOs, and all the scary things that go bump in the night. It’ll also cover experiences like the LINK and the Unseen Courts, and how they all fit together right under the nose of humanity.

The GM section is going to go in-depth on the ways and means of running a session, how to use fast stat blocks, and writing mission briefs for players — which I’m happy to say is very close to being outlined for writing. Much of that has been made possible by the most recent testing over the last week, so special thanks goes out to Mike Smith and Angela Snow.

This is extremely exciting. So stay tuned for even more badassery as we move along.

Synergy System balance notes from a 32-hour beta test, plus a first look at what's coming to NYTE City's lore and GM section.

Get Dangerous Teases Upcoming Quick Start Guide for Shadows RPG

Greetings!

The Get Dangerous Crew recently gathered to delve into the Shadows RPG Quick Start Guide. Our DM, d33kode, was unavailable, so we took matters into our own hands and made the most of our time together. Watch the recap here.

The Shadows RPG Quick Start Guide is an excellent resource for players new to the game or looking to jump right into the action. It provides a comprehensive overview of the game’s mechanics, character creation, and the world in which the game takes place.

Our Quick Start Guide is still in production, but we’re excited to share some of the details with you. It will be available soon via our Patreon, so stay tuned! In the video, we go over what we have so far — we wanted to focus on making it user-friendly for new players.
