Light spoilers: this review mentions the film’s climax and final alien reveal.

Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day feels like a missed opportunity from a director who has previously made alien encounters feel genuinely extraordinary. Despite an intriguing premise, the film struggles to deliver the emotional weight, narrative momentum, or memorable payoff needed to make its story resonate.

The plot jumps between storylines and developments in ways that make the overall narrative feel disjointed. Worse, many of the major outcomes are easy to predict, leaving little room for genuine surprise or suspense. Rather than building toward a compelling conclusion, the film often feels like it is simply moving through the motions.

The climax does little to improve matters. The main villain gives up far too easily, making the final confrontation feel underwhelming and robbing the story of a more satisfying resolution. For a film built around such enormous implications, the conclusion lacks the tension and dramatic impact it desperately needs.

The final alien reveal is another sticking point. It feels like a throwback to an earlier era of science fiction, which may appeal to audiences nostalgic for Spielberg’s classic approach to extraterrestrial encounters. However, viewers raised on more modern interpretations of alien stories may find the reveal underwhelming or even a little dated.

Ultimately, Disclosure Day has the ingredients for an intriguing science fiction film, but they never come together in a particularly meaningful way. The story is predictable, the climax lacks teeth, and the emotional impact is minimal. For a filmmaker with Spielberg’s track record, the result is disappointing.

For these reasons, I put Disclosure Day in the D tier for 2026.
